Why should drama school shows only be for agents?
Being founder-led means doing things differently, and that’s exactly what Emil Dale Academy has done. The Academy transformed a disused old factory in the heart of Hitchin into a professional, not-for-profit theatre – complete with West End-level production values, including automation and even a revolving stage.
Unlike many drama school performances, which are often staged exclusively for agents and parents, Emil Dale Academy productions are designed to simulate the demands of a real theatrical run. Students perform in sell-out public shows across one- or two-week runs at the Academy’s very own Factory Playhouse Theatre, building the stamina, discipline, and confidence required for a professional career on stage.
The stage itself is designed in-the-round, ensuring that every performer is visible from all angles and integral to the production. This layout immerses audiences in the action while simultaneously teaching students the true sense of ensemble. By bridging the gap between drama school training and the professional theatre industry, these productions attract large public audiences of up to 6,000 people per year.
The Factory Playhouse Theatre matches top industry standards, featuring live West End musicians wired into the theatre to accompany all BA (Hons) productions, as well as professional crew and creatives actively working in theatre and screen. Audiences are invited to arrive 90 minutes before each performance to enjoy refreshments, pizzas, and cheeseboards in a pop-up front-of-house Prosecco bar.
Many audience members return season after season, never missing a production. The Academy takes pride in contributing to the local community by offering access to high-quality theatre without the need to travel far.
As founder Emil Dale explains, “It’s unique to us. Students take part in longer runs, giving them real-world experience in their third year. People come from all over the UK to watch Factory Playhouse Productions.”
The audiences agree; every run sells out, and the productions hold a 92% 5-star rating on TripAdvisor.
Now in its 12th year, demand for tickets is higher than ever. Perhaps it’s time for them to find an even bigger Factory.
