Ella McLaughlin Reaches Final of Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year

We’re thrilled to announce that Ella McLaughlin, one of our second-year BA (Hons) Musical Theatre students at Emil Dale Academy, has been selected as a finalist in the 2025 Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition, widely considered one of the most prestigious accolades for young musical theatre talent in the UK.

Now in its 17th year, the competition, known affectionately as SSSSPOTY, celebrates the UK’s top drama school performers while showcasing work by new British musical theatre writers. Finalists perform two pieces: one from Sondheim’s legendary songbook, and another from a recent UK musical, in partnership with New UK Musicals.

To be one of only twelve finalists nationwide is a major achievement and speaks volumes about Ella’s talent, dedication, and the standard of training here at Emil Dale Academy.

“To have one of our students reach the SSSSPOTY final for the second consecutive year is an incredible achievement,” said founder Emil Dale. “It’s a clear sign that our training doesn’t just prepare performers, it launches them into the heart of the industry. Ella’s success reflects her dedication and the passion we see in our students every single day.”

The final takes place this June at London’s Sondheim Theatre, where a panel of top industry judges will award a £1,000 prize and silver salver to the performer delivering the most outstanding interpretation across both songs.

We’re especially proud that Ella will continue our growing legacy at this event, following on from Oliver Halford’s finalist appearance last year. Her success is a proud reminder of what our students are capable of, and why Emil Dale Academy continues to stand out as a leading force in musical theatre training.
